The last couple months have been tough and a bit frustrating at times but I'm finally in a position where I'm ready to announce the release date... Just not right now though. But what I can say is you won't have long to wait at all. In today's blog I'm going to run through some of the final updates that will come into the game for the released version and also some of the bits that will have to wait for future updates.
Lets start with #1 on the list of improvements, a training camp screen, one of the main points of feedback in beta testing was "I'm not sure my fighter is improving" / "What does a coach do?" / "How do my boxers stats go up" / etc... The reason this was so frequent is because we didn't have a screen to show the skills going up before/after a fight. Until now, the below images are just my drafts (made in powerpoint) but they show you what we're looking to add to the game (it may not look like this in the real version). This screen will appear before you enter a fight and even get to the "Tale of the Tape", we wanted it before as it perfectly simulates the improvements a fighter could/would make during their training camp. I'm really excited to see how this looks in the game and think it will make a major difference to gameplay.
Next on the list as you can see above to the right, weight class showing when you are hiring a boxer. This was more of a bug/miss when the beta was built but it will 100% be there for release!
Moving on from that, there was a lot of feedback about the rankings system. Certain ranks are hard to move from, you move down at a crazy rate, you move down without fighting etc... All of these were kind of bugs but more that we just had to review some algorithms, these should all be working much better but I will be able to check when I beta test the final version this week. Also on rankings, something I overlooked when designing the game, a lot of boxing promotion is about risk & reward, now in the game you receive the same reward from boxing a lower ranked opponent to a higher one, doesn't make much sense really? This is something the team will be adding for the release so in the full version if you are brave and gamble on a big fight you will receive the rewards through the ranking system.
Retirement, another oversight from me... Apologies.... So at no point does a boxer trigger to say "Time to hang up the gloves", this means you can literally continue boxing with the same guy into the thousands, same as rankings, doesn't make sense. We're now going to put triggers into each fighter so between x - x number of fights they will tell you their retiring. One thing I'm trying to add is an extra dilemma so say "pay them a bonus" this would keep them with you for another few fights.
What else? Little things like fight record will be changed because I made a mistake there with the display, thanks for making me aware. Individual fight records, this is hopefully going to be accessed from Fight History and the boxers own page. Were also going to add music and SFX, the dialogue has all been updated and the commentary has more variety.
Most of the work over the last couple of months has however gone on resolving some of the bugs which were encountered.
As I've said many times before the budget for this game was very small, it's all come straight from my pocket to build this app. Because of this features had to be cut from the game initially and now some updates from our beta testing feedback will have to wait for future updates which is a shame but we have to start somewhere. I want to everyone who offered me feedback, please don't think that I haven't listened to you if your request doesn't appear in this version of the game! I've got an excel sheet full of all enhancement requests, it's just about prioritising them. In an ideal world I would love to have everything in this app for release but it's just not possible... Having said that, the game that will be released is a great game! It's fun, addictive, detailed and unique.
To finish off, a couple of updates that I wasn't able to add which I really wanted to. 1. Titles - there will be no titles in the game at initial release (Art work is expensive but that's not why these are not in the game it's the time it would take for the art work and implementation. I don't want everyone to be waiting longer for this game. It works without titles and we will bring them in when we can, it also gives us the chance to have a think about exactly how we want to implement them). 2. Boxer Images - The boxers will look the same for release (this barely appeared in beta testing but everyone must have noticed there is a lack of diversity in boxers, similar to the above it's doable but would cost quite a bit, the main thing is the time it would take. We'd use a different system to before and basically get someone to design all the boxers uniquely by hand, you can see why this would take some time). They are probably the main two that I would have liked to see in the first version but miss out, even still they will be in the game within a couple months of release (all things well).
Thanks for reading this! Next weeks blogs may be a little different as we gear up for release date... If you run a blog, podcast or youtube channel, I would really appreciate being talked about or posted about, I know it sounds like I'm begging but this game is going to be free and it's made by a boxing fan for boxing fans... Please let me know if you can do anything.
