Been thinking over the last few days... Why is boxing always bottom of the list? You look around popular culture and there are boxers everywhere now just as there was in years gone by... The new Sky Sports features Anthony Joshua in the centre of just about everything, the same man who is odds-on favourite to win sports personality of the year. So why with boxing so popular is it never looked at as one of the biggest sports in the country and why have EA/2KSPORTS not started production into a new boxing game?
The simple answer either of these companies will use is costs, particularly around image rights... UFC owns all the image rights to their fighters so EA only has to agree one payment whereas boxing has no such agreement meaning image rights sit with the fighters themselves. This may not cost as much as people think but it's a serious amount of work that would have to go into getting real boxers inside the game. Both these large companies seem in the joint opinion that without real boxers the game wouldn't sell and real boxers are just too much work to get into the game... Of course I could be wrong with that, there could be another reason why or even better a new game could be on the horizon.
Aside from this there is simply a real lack of boxing games in the market, myself and some other indie developers are working on management games which are great for fans but I know as a fan myself we also want that mainstream title. So why am I talking about this? Well as I said I've been putting quite a bit of thought into this over the weekend particularly after reading the Forbes article (shared on social media), last week. In it the author (Brian Mazique) discusses the potential "gold mine" for independent developers to produce a Fight Night style boxing sim.
Now, simply put I don't have the investment, experience or expertise to produce a game of this magnitude but that shouldn't stop me from drafting up some designs. Over this weekend I was working away of some templates for what I would like to see in a new Fight Night game. I've also dug out my old Xbox360 and reordered FN Champion, really can't wait to play it again. As my designs grow for this I will keep everyone updated, I did mention above that the likelihood of anything coming of this is small but worth a go huh?
Another thing I wanted to just touch on slightly, I've started watching a new TV series which is slightly boxing related (Ray Donovan), I'm still on season 1 but have to say it's really awesome. The series is focused around a family of former fighters who own a boxing gym but the actual fights rarely feature, even still it carries lots of boxing references and follows a rough Irish American family. Would highly recommend.
Sorry to not discuss The Boxing Promoter in this blog, sadly there just isn't really anything to update on right now, everything is just as it was. But as always as soon as I do have any updates I will circle on my social media.
