Only a couple things to discuss today, firstly a quick update from a discussion with the dev team yesterday, followed by a small piece on the current state of boxing and why it needs more competitive matchups, then I’ll answer a couple of the questions which have been sent in… Be sure to send in questions for the blog or podcast, I’ll answer anything related to The Boxing Promoter or boxing & gaming in general, so anything about my favourite games, opinions of boxers, specific areas of the game and what I plan for them… Just send them in and I’ll do my best!
To start with I spoke with one of the developers last night, he just wanted to confirm a few things with me before proceeding with bug resolutions, the good news is he’s managed for fix almost all the current bugs (particularly the smaller ones), this is a really good step in development, still a long way to go but it’s important the game is running 99% bug free in our next beta update. Not sure exactly when we can expect the new update to come out, possibly after some of the enhancements are brought in so we can test them through.
Also, another good update, it looks like we will be able to release our next beta version on both iOS and Android giving everyone a chance to test The Boxing Promoter before final release. This hasn’t yet been confirmed but it looks more than likely.
So, onto my personal section, I just wanted to talk a little about competitive boxing and what needs to change… On Friday night Sky Sports broadcast a show were every home fighter was facing an opponent who lost their most recent fight, you always expect the a-side fighter to have a slight advantage otherwise they wouldn’t take the fight however I just thought the whole card lacked a “real fight”. The night was packages as a NXTGEN show to bring through younger talent which I’m all for but the average age was 28 and the average #fights on record was 8. Sport in general is all about entertainment, simple as that! The money generated is because of the fans who pay to watch or tune in via TV, for me personally the only thing a sporting game/match/fight needs to be is competitive, I get no enjoyment whatsoever watching high class amateurs face part-time journeymen but worse than that is when you see some seasoned pro’s fight part-time boxers. There is something fundamentally wrong in there and I’m not sure where it stems from, do the fighters themselves not want to take these tough domestic fights? Or is the promoter trying to protect their investment? A lot of the mentality stems from the glorifying of a 0 on a record… Even the greatest boxers ever have losses. Did people stop watching them? In Britain, I feel the quality of our domestic level boxing has increased significantly over the last 5 years but our boxers are fighting for international silver titles against “has-beens” rather than fighting in a competitive match up against a similar level opponent from the area/English/British title. Don’t get me wrong I do understand the perspective from both the promoter & fighters team however it leaves us (The Fans) having to watch loads of one-sided encounters until finally we may just get a competitively fought match.
How can this change? To use an example here Ohara Davies (matchroom fighter) has accepted an offer to fight Josh Taylor (cyclone fighter) on channel 5 in July. I like everything about this fight, firstly I think OD has one of the most padded records in British boxing but I do like the guys ambition and desire to fight anyone, he was already en route to box for a world title in the next 18 months (due to his ranking) but instead has chosen to box on a hostile show in the opponent’s hometown for a decent paycheque. People have their reservations about Davies and it’s easy to see why but it’s tough to say he isn’t one of our top domestic lightweights… The reason I keep mentioning Davies rather than Taylor is because Taylor and his team would always fancy this fight, it’s a good payday and a platform to perform against a fighter he should beat, why wouldn’t he want the fight? That’s the reason I’m credit OD for accepting the fight. This is a good example of a boxer not looking to take the easy option and the easy money, he’s risking his winning record which I personally think he will lose to Taylor but if he loses who cares? It’s tough to criticise fighters because I have massive respect for anyone who steps into the ring but at times I wish boxers would take more risks on the way up… Hopefully that made some sense…
Lastly, onto a couple of questions from Rob Morris;
How do you get past the number 2 ranked contender? I have beaten him many times but I can never get past him in the rankings. – This is a bug in the current version of the game, the same thing happened with me, my fighter reached rank 3 but never higher, then he began to drop down despite winning. The whole ranking system is being reviewed, ideally, it’s going to be improved so taking riskier fights offers a greater reward and easier fights offers less progress. The rankings are supposed to move down if your fighter is inactive (to simulate reality) but currently this happens too quickly. Rankings are being worked on with the bug fixes.
What in your opinion was the best version of Fight Night? The Fight Night game I played the most and received the most enjoyment from was Round 4, they added fight styles into this game which didn’t always work but were cool all the same, also the addition of legend boxers and enhancements to the campaign and online made this one the most enjoyable for me. For me Champion was a disappointment not because it wasn’t good but it just didn’t improve enough from Round 4 whereas Round 4 was miles better than Round 3 in my opinion…. Having said that I really enjoyed the whole franchise and really really wish EA would bring it back!
